Over its 15-season run, Supernatural has aired 327 episodes, and each one has been unique in its plot and atmosphere.

It seems that the show has covered everything, horror, thriller, action, fantasy, comedy, and, of course, romance. But while some storylines deeply touched or amused viewers, some were difficult to watch.

One such storyline came at the beginning of Season 8 and was considered by fans to be one of the show's cringiest.

At the end of Season 7, Dean Winchester ends up in Purgatory, leaving his brother Sam alone. A year later, at the beginning of Season 8, Dean manages to escape and reunite with Sam, who has retired from demon hunting during this time, much to his brother's dismay.

Later, it is revealed that while Dean was away, Sam had a relationship with veterinarian Amelia, whose husband died in Afghanistan, and is still not over it. The whole Amelia storyline, shown in flashback, is what gives fans the creeps.

The flashbacks were very different from the show's usual narrative.

They had filters and felt like some otherworldly experiences or scenes from a dream. They didn't even tell the whole story of the relationship, just a few moments: how they met, a picnic in the park, a conversation after their first sex, meeting her father, learning that Amelia's husband is alive, breaking up.

Fans felt that the relationship arc was forced and out of character for Sam. Many felt that there was no chemistry between the two characters. In fact, it was so painful to watch that many fans believed it was intentional.

Probably the awful chemistry was meant to make it even more obvious that Sam didn't belong in this oversaturated flashback world.

Even Jared Padalecki, who played Sam, was not a fan of this storyline.

He once said at TorCon that he felt Sam would have done everything he could to find Dean. Instead, he tried to start a new life with Amelia, which felt forced.

So fans have come up with a theory that would explain such out-of-character behavior. The theory is that Amelia never existed, and Sam just created her and her whole story in his head to deal with a mental breakdown after losing his brother.

Weird chemistry and behavior, flashback filters, and the fact that no one but Sam ever met Amelia made this theory a headcanon for many fans.
