Is there a chance we'll see Gabrielle Solis and the other Wisteria Lane housewives again?

The current decade will go down in history as the era of reboots and revivals of popular projects from the past. Sex and the City got a sequel series, Twilight and Harry Potter are getting their new TV adaptations, but there is still one cult show that seems to have been forgotten. But is it, really?

While talking to Eva Longoria about her recent directorial debut, Flamin' Hot, Access Hollywood's Mario Lopez asked her if she would follow her fans' burning desire and be part of a Desperate Housewives reboot, should it ever be produced. Much to everyone's delight, the actress-turned-director didn't miss a beat in giving an affirmative answer.

'I would be the first to sign up for a reboot. I miss Gabby so much. I miss being Gabby Solis,' Longoria said.

However, it is too soon to open your bottle of The Real Housewives Wine Collection in celebration. It looks like a return to Fairview is unlikely to happen anytime soon, as Eva added that creator Marc Cherry told her he didn't see how a sequel could add to the story that's already been told.

'I've talked to him several times,' she said. 'He feels like there's no "why now?" For the sake of a reboot, he wouldn't do it. He feels like, "What do I have to say with these characters that we haven't already fully mined?"'

Eva also noted that television has changed a lot since Desperate Housewives and other fan-favourite shows of the early 2000s ended. Today, we have streaming services ready to release miniseries that tell a complete story in just a few episodes, but back then, shows were supposed to have several dozen episodes per season with compelling storylines in each one.

With eight seasons, Desperate Housewives aired 180 episodes, and it looks like the series has simply run out of storylines to explore.

'I come from the generation of 24 episodes a year for a decade of our lives,' Eva said. 'We fully mined those characters. There was nobody on the street that was left to sleep with. I slept with everybody. I was like, "Uh, what do we do now?"'

The actress added that the issues the ABC signature show raised are no longer at the forefront of people's minds.

'Twenty years ago we were saying something about ageism and saying something about being a housewife, and it was shocking. There's a lot of things we said and did that was groundbreaking, and I don't think it is now. Now it's like the norm.'

While this is true, there is no doubt that with Eva Longoria and other beloved cast members on board, a Desperate Housewives reboot would be able to tell relevant stories and explore new groundbreaking themes. Let's hope Marc Cherry will at least think about it!
