Euphoria Season 3 Still Happening, Showrunner Teases Even Darker Story
Grown-up Rue will have to face some darker issues in the upcoming season.
After the disastrous failure of The Idol, as well as the scandals that allegedly occurred during the filming of Euphoria, hardly anyone expected that Sam Levinson would return to his first brainchild. The situation was further complicated by the departure of Kate actress Barbie Ferreira and the tragic death of Angus Cloud, who portrayed the empathetic drug dealer Fezco.
However, the showrunner is apparently not giving up on his project. Levinson has recently shared that, in the show's upcoming installment, the beloved Euphoria characters will have to face even darker events than in the previous two seasons. Zendaya's Rue will continue to narrate the story, navigating her adult life after leaving high school.
Season 2 ended on a relatively satisfying note for the protagonist, as Rue managed to stay clean until the end of the school year after a terrible relapse that hurt both her and her loved ones. But the third season will clearly be much different because the show is about to make a huge time jump.
'There is talk of it being approximately five years in the future, and that [the characters are] not in high school anymore,' Euphoria's head costume designer Heidi Bivens revealed.
This seems like a logical development to keep the story engaging for viewers, who also grow along with the characters. Exploring the outside world beyond high school, the Season 3 plot promises enough room for character development and exciting storylines.
Levinson has also said that the atmosphere of the next season will be 'film noir,' and through Rue's perspective, the story will 'explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.'
Will Rue have to face mundane social issues like bureaucracy or workplace intrigue? Perhaps, especially if she chooses to pursue a career in politics, law, or a similar field. In a broader sense, dealing with the 'corrupt world' may refer to the character following her moral compass and confronting society that values power and money above humanity.
Sadly, it looks like we won't get to see Euphoria Season 3 anytime soon, as production has been pushed back to 2025 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
