The Television Academy has shut down talk that Seth Rogen is banned from the Emmys, saying despite his 2021 venue critique he isn’t blacklisted and they’d welcome him onstage.

Seth Rogen thinks the Emmys iced him out after he trashed their 2021 setup. The Television Academy says that is not the case.

How we got here

  • Back in 2021, Rogen hit the stage to present Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and immediately torched the room. He said the show had promised an outdoor event, but what he walked into felt like a tightly sealed indoor space during a pandemic. The gist: too many people in too small a tent, all for the sake of chandeliers. He joked about not wanting to endanger Eugene Levy and went for a punchline about going from wiping groceries to having Paul Bettany sneeze in his face.
  • On a recent Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance, Rogen said the people behind the Emmys were clearly unhappy with those comments. He noted he has not been invited back since, producers come and go, and he floated that he has basically been 'blacklisted.'
  • Now, the Television Academy has responded. They put out a statement congratulating Rogen on his recent Emmy haul and made a point of saying they expect to see him at future ceremonies (via Entertainment Weekly).

'The Television Academy congratulates Mr. Rogen on his multiple Emmy wins this past September, and we look forward to seeing him in the audience at many ceremonies to come.'

So, according to the Academy, there is no ban. The phrasing is interesting — 'in the audience' is doing a lot of work — but the message is pretty clear: he is welcome at the Emmys.

Translation: the door is open. Whether Rogen ends up back on stage might come down to which producers are in charge that year and whether he feels like revisiting the tent jokes.
