The Morning Show is stacking its roster for season 5, with Emmy winner Jeff Daniels boarding the Apple TV newsroom drama in a major recurring role alongside leads Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.

The Morning Show is adding some heavyweight boardroom energy: Jeff Daniels is joining Season 5 in a major recurring role. Apple confirmed the casting while cameras are already rolling on the new season.

Who Daniels is playing

Daniels will play Lukas, a self-made billionaire who built a prominent investment firm. He is not part of the newsroom, which is exactly why this could be fun. It also has a neat bit of TV-nerd symmetry: Daniels last anchored a series about broadcast journalism on The Newsroom, and now he is circling the media world again from the money side of the glass.

Who is in the mix for Season 5

  • Leads: Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston return and continue to executive produce
  • New addition: Jeff Daniels as Lukas, a billionaire investor in a major recurring role
  • Returning cast: Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie, and Jon Hamm

Behind the scenes

Media Res produces the series. Charlotte Stoudt is back as showrunner and executive producer. Mimi Leder directs and executive produces. Additional executive producers include Michael Ellenberg, Lindsey Springer, Zander Lehmann, and Micah Schraft. Witherspoon executive produces with Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, and Aniston executive produces with Kristin Hahn for Echo Films.

Where the story stood

Season 4 unfolded in spring 2024, almost two years after the events of Season 3. With the UBA-NBN merger completed, the newsroom carried more weight than ever — and the pressure cooked from the inside. The show leaned into hidden agendas and the slipperiness of truth in a sharply divided America. For context, Season 3 landed 16 Emmy nominations, and Billy Crudup won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for playing the ever-scheming Cory Ellison.

Daniels recent run

Jeff Daniels is a two-time Emmy winner for The Newsroom and Godless. He recently popped up on Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking as Jimmy's father, led the drama American Rust across two seasons on Showtime and Prime Video, and appeared in Netflix's limited series A Man In Full.

All told, bringing a billionaire power player into UBA's orbit feels tailor-made for fireworks — especially with Crudup's Cory in the mix. Season 5 is already in production, so expect boardroom sparks sooner rather than later.
