But that wasn't their fault.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are among the iconic romantic duos of our time. They have starred together in three films, each time wowing the audience with their amazing on-screen chemistry.

The stars' greatest triumph was the musical La La Land (2016), which earned an astonishing $447.4 million on a budget of only $30 million. Their very first collaboration, Crazy, Stupid Love (2011), was also a solid success, grossing $145 million against the budget of $50 million.

But in between these two productions, there was also a third movie, which isn't remembered by many, and Emma and Ryan probably don't want people to remember it either — Gangster Squad (2013).

Gangster Squad wasn't a commercial success. The movie grossed $105.2 million on a budget estimated at $60–75 million, which means that, after the theaters' cut, it almost certainly remained in the red.

It was largely panned by critics and casual viewers, who saw many problems with the film, but Stone and Gosling's performances were certainly not one of them.

First of all, Gangster Squad was an action crime thriller, which is not exactly the actors' forte. And second, while their characters were in love with each other, their relationship is often considered to be one of the weakest points of the plot, so Emma and Ryan's knack for portraying lovers failed to save that movie — there is only so much even a genius can make out of poor material.

Those who criticize Gangster Squad rarely aim their vitriol at its cast, instead arguing that the stars didn't have a chance to shine due to lackluster writing and excessive reliance on action in scenes.

But no matter how bad that movie was, Stone and Gosling were able to fix things through their next movie together, La La Land, which eventually grossed four times as much as its predecessor.

It's obvious that the actors enjoy working together, and their great experience on set translates nicely into their on-screen chemistry. Ryan Gosling said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that, for him, working with Stone is like 'constantly opening Christmas presents.' For her part, in the acceptance speech for her La La Land Oscar, Emma thanked Ryan 'for always raising the bar and for being the greatest partner on this crazy adventure.'

Hopefully, the two beloved actors will collaborate again on another movie that will beat that La La Land box office record!
