Donna's "Black Inside" Suits Scene Feels So Much Cringier in 2023

The beloved show had its flaws.

USA Network's Suits may be best remembered today as the show that starred Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry. But the series itself is actually quite watchable, with good chemistry between the leads and thoroughly written plots that elevate it from the realm of forgettable crime procedurals.

However, even though Suits ran for nine seasons between 2011 and 2019 and was fairly successful during that time, it still had a lot of controversial and ill-advised moments, and some of them could have caused a massive backlash if they were to air in 2023.

Perhaps the most controversial scene came in Season 6 Episode 2, where Donna Paulsen, already one of the most hated characters, said something that fans still can't believe.

The Unforgivable Words

Considering that Donna is played by Caucasian redhead Sarah Rafferty, it was extremely confusing to hear her tell Gretchen Bodinski that she was 'black on the inside' and that she didn't really feel like a white woman at all.

Such a comment was completely uncalled for and made viewers dislike Donna even more, which is a great shame considering that Rafferty's character was effectively killed off due to the writers' stupid decision.

'After that scene I was annoyed every time she was on screen — she was one of the best characters up until that time too. The writers just ran out of stuff to do with her and gave her ridiculous promotions that were in no way realistic,' a fan noted.

Worth Being Canceled For

Undoubtedly, these words in the script would have been completely career-ending if the episode aired in 2023. However, the fact that the Suits writers didn't receive any prominent backlash for their actions in 2016 is also quite puzzling.

'But Donna saying "she's black inside" when this episode originally aired… would not have been okay at that time either. Was there backlash on the show's and actors' social media accounts? I find it really hard to believe there wasn't,' another fan commented on Reddit.

But even with that massive criticism, Suits is a pretty respectable show and can delight you with fascinating stories even today. However, if you decide to watch it in 2023, keep in mind that some of the other storylines haven't aged all that well.
