It looks like the frontrunner is falling a bit short of expectations.

The 21st season of American Idol proved once again just how many incredibly talented singers live in the US.

This year, the voices and performances were in fact so great that fans were practically fighting online every time a contestant was eliminated.

However, the Top 6 turned out to be a universally strong group of performers, with each and every one of them capable of winning the competition under the right conditions. But even among these singers, one contestant stands out as the most likely to destroy the competition in the finale — Iam Tongi.

The kid from Hawaii became a sensation right from his first audition, as both the audience and the judges loved hearing his smooth, acoustic guitar ballads, which sound very different from the pop or country songs the other contestants are singing. Iam feels like a breath of fresh air this season, and millions of fans are hoping that he will emerge victorious in the competition.

But one question still remains — can Iam become a real star?

'Do we really think he has the long lasting star quality to not only win this whole thing, but move on and be a mega recording star and performer? He does great singing songs in his reach, but he's not a power vocalist like Wé and he doesn't have a crazy stage presence like Zachariah,' one fan pointed out.

And while this idea sounds reasonable, it's important to remember that not every singer aspires to the level of popularity of Katy Perry or Harry Styles, as some people are just not cut out to perform in stadiums. It looks like Iam is just that kind of performer, who would probably go on to sing soft songs in small venues — but that doesn't mean he can't become a huge star with such an approach.

'There's a whole world of successful musicians who aren't playing arenas or who aren't powerhouse vocalists. He's a Jason Mraz type of musician,' another fan noted.

Thankfully, we won't have to wait long to find out if Iam wins this season, as there are only three episodes left. The next one arrives on ABC on May 14, 2023.
