His job was to sound like a Chicago native, and he nailed it brilliantly.

Season 11 of Chicago Fire, NBC's drama series about the personal and professional lives of the Firehouse 51 staff, will be remembered for both uplifting twists and disappointing news from the cast members.

Early in the season, Taylor Kinney announced he would leave the project indefinitely for personal reasons, and Kelly Severide fans are now worried about the actor himself and the future of his character.

As for positive news, viewers were glad to see Jesse Spencer reprise his role as Matthew Casey in the current season. Although he has not been part of the core cast since Season 10, Casey delighted fans with his appearances in a few episodes this season, visiting his former colleagues in Chicago's Firehouse 51.

In the NBC show, Spencer does a marvelous job portraying a native of the Windy City, and few viewers realize he is actually not from America at all!

As a matter of fact, Jesse Spencer was born in Melbourne, Australia. He spent his childhood and was educated there, and his first significant role was in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. After gaining widespread fame, Spencer started appearing regularly in British and American TV series and films and performed on stage in Australia, the UK, and the US.

In 2021, Spencer became an American citizen, but this did not prevent him from keeping his native accent.

Obviously, Matthew Casey does not have a foreign accent in Chicago. In fact, Spencer does it so well, fans would never suspect he isn't natural. But according to the actor himself, doing the American accent wasn't an easy task for him.

'You can't just show up and do it. There's a bit more homework that you have to do, in terms of sounds and combinations of sounds and musicality or lack of musicality,' Jesse shared.

The actor revealed that it was a real battle with his own brain because it was difficult to get into the character and exclude his own personality from Matthew's voice and demeanor.

'My mouth was fighting every word that came out of my mouth. [I'm] in the character's clothes, on the set, looking at the other characters — it was like a weird out of body experience!' the actor added.

You'll get a chance to check out Spencer's wonderful accent work once again, as Matthew Casey will show up in this season's final Episode 22, to be released on May 24.

Unfortunately, we still don't know if Jesse Spencer will appear in the upcoming Season 14, but the actor has mentioned he is willing to guest-star in the show at least occasionally.
