The Avatar director is working on a massive Christmas present you'll appreciate.

Summary

  • 'It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.'
  • Both Avatar movies were released during the holiday season.
  • It'll take two years of post-production to cook the franchise's third installment.

Winter has finally arrived for those living in the northern hemisphere, and that means one thing - the holidays are coming. To many, it's 'the most wonderful time of the year' when the air is filled with the aroma of spices and pastries, various conifers are adorned with all kinds of ornaments, and chubby men get to play Santa Claus. Whether or not you believe in the man in the red suit, there's something magical about Yuletide, and it's especially evident in the movie industry.

Traditionally, Christmas is the time when a slew of new movies – mostly holiday rom-coms – premiere. This year, for example, Eddie Murphy's new comedy, Candy Cane Lane, will be released, starring Danielle Pinnock of Ghosts fame. But every now and then, the holiday season also sees some non-festive, high-profile premieres. For example, James Cameron's Avatar franchise hit theaters in mid-December.

The Legacy of Avatar

Although it's been almost a year since Avatar: The Way of Water premiered, the splash that James Cameron's film made can still be heard today. For one thing, the second installment of the franchise earned a staggering $2.32 billion at the box office, making it the third highest-grossing film in cinema history. With that in mind, you won't be surprised to learn that the first film in the series, Avatar, holds the highest grossing title with $2.92 billion.

Set on a fictional planet called Pandora, Avatar explores the scenario of humanity depleting Earth's resources and traveling the galaxy in search of new materials. In addition to being a wonderful, thought-provoking movie about our attitude toward our own planet and our loved ones, James Cameron's film captivates audiences with its visual beauty, created with the help of CGI.

In this light, it's no wonder people love the franchise so much and want to see another movie as soon as possible.

James Cameron's Christmas Present

Given the extensive use of VFX in the production of the Avatar films, it's no surprise that the post-production takes significantly more time than the actual filming. For this reason, Avatar 3 won't be ready for another two years. But when it does, it'll be the ultimate Christmas present.

'We're into a very hectic two-year post-production right now, so it'll be Christmas of '25,' James Cameron commented on the release of his third Avatar movie in a recent interview.

So, whether you believe in Santa or not, James Cameron will be one for you.
