Less drama? Or different drama?

With Young Royals Season 3 fast approaching, some fans have been calling for less drama and more of the love story at the heart of the show. But is this what they really want?

In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of LGBTQ+ teen dramas on our screens, but Young Royals offers something different. As a future king, Willhelm not only faces the criticism of an unaccepting family – he also has the eyes of the world upon him.

His blossoming romance with Simon – and the way he handled it – was at the heart of the show's first season, and season two began with the fallout from the leaked video.

It was natural for Willhelm to feel vengeful towards his cousin August, as he was the one who made sure the video got out. But some viewers felt that this, and more of the tension between Willhelm and Simon, should have been toned down for the second season.

'We have Heartstopper, which is 90% love and cuteness, and then this, which is 90% stress. We need some cuteness to balance it out,' lamented one fan on Reddit.

Viewers want something different

Throughout season two, Willhelm was torn between what his heart wanted and what his title told him to do. Perhaps this was overplayed, but it all led up to the final scene where he finally made good on his promise to Simon to stop hiding the truth.

This paves the way for a season where we see a lot more of the couple enjoying their relationship. It doesn't mean the show has to be drama-free, just that the drama can come from elsewhere. If what we're led to believe is about to be revealed, the couple are going to have a lot to deal with from the establishment and the media.

So a few more glimpses of them finding some quiet moments away from the turmoil that will undoubtedly surround them would be good for the show. At the very least, we should see them put up a united front in Season 3 - hopefully with plenty of support from those around them - and a few loving moments to show that their relationship is more than just support in the face of adversity can only enhance the show.

As one fan noted: 'I can definitely see them fighting the establishment and the media and possibly dealing with fame and paparazzi and scandals so that will be interesting. It will be really nice to see them on one page together though.'

But of course it's too late to change anything now. Filming wrapped in June and all we need to know is when we can finally find out what happens next.
