Or was it just a hint that she’s now a recurring character?

Fans of Netflix's hit show The Lincoln Lawyer were sent into a frenzy when Maggie McPherson (Neve Campbell) announced to her ex-husband Mickey (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) that she was leaving town for a new job in San Diego.

There had already been some talk about whether the Scream actress' time on the show was up after her character was given less screen time than she had in the first season.

When Maggie dropped the bombshell, Mickey was less than pleased, as he still holds a torch for her and clearly thinks there's a chance they could get back together. Indeed, in the Michael Connelly book series on which the TV show is based, the two have an on-off relationship throughout.

Moving from LA to San Diego doesn't prevent Maggie from ever returning to the show - and arguably opens up the chance for her to become a recurring character, returning when storylines and scheduling allow.

Indeed, scheduling may have been part of the reason for Maggie's decreased involvement in season 2 of The Lincoln Lawyer. While the show was in production, Neve Campbell was involved in another project, a series called Avalon, which ultimately did not get the green light.

The other possible explanation for Maggie's reduced storyline could simply be that the showrunners were satisfied that they'd covered that aspect of the show in Season 1. She is a recurring character in the book series. And while it may have made sense to show her story as part of the background to Mickey's life, it seems pointless to keep her as a main character in season 2, only to make her a recurring character on screen.

So far we haven't even had confirmation that there will be a third season of The Lincoln Lawyer. But given its popularity, that announcement seems like a formality. But of course no actor is going to commit to appearing in a show that hasn't been commissioned.

So it seems likely that we'll have to wait for Netflix to confirm that a new series is definitely coming before we can start speculating about who might be in it. But it also seems likely that when it's announced, we won't know too much about the extent (if any) of Neve Campbell's involvement. Although a recurring love interest for Mickey seems very much on the cards.
