Our Flag Means Death (OFMD) just dropped its tearjerker of a finale featuring some of the best acting in the series, leaving its massive audience shocked. Viewers came away from those 30 minutes with extremely conflicted feelings.
On the one hand, love (and a little poison) supplied a happy ending for Stede Bonnet, a.k.a. The Gentleman Pirate, Ed Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard, and most of the Revenge crew. On the other hand, the season finale featured an unexpected death.
Izzy Hands, who underwent a powerful character transformation in Season 2 and gave speeches that made us shed a few tears (or rather turn on the waterworks full blast), took a stray bullet from the annoying noseless Prince Ricky Banes and checked out.
The scene of his death, accompanied by a heartfelt confession to Ed, hit fans hard and sent many into a downward spiral. But what if this is not the end of Izzy Hands?
Hopeful Tweet from Showrunner
OFMD creator David Jenkins, who's active on social media and openly talks with fans of his series, made an intriguing note on his X (formerly Twitter) account a few hours ago, no doubt in response to those who came to his comments to lament the death of the beloved first mate.
‘fwiw there’s no version of this show that doesn’t include Izzy Hands,’ Jenkins wrote.
Considering that the showrunner has already announced his plans to make a third season of OFMD, could this tweet mean that we'll be seeing Izzy in future episodes?
Resurrections Are The New Normal On OFMD
The show is big on self-references and plot point rehashings. So, we can find hints about Izzy's fate in past episodes. For example, remember how Lucius Spriggs was pushed out to sea by Blackbeard in the Season 1 finale, only to reappear alive and not-so-well in the second chapter?
Also, Blackbeard himself had a near-death experience that gave us a hilarious moment with the mermaid Stede. Could these storylines be repeated in Season 3 with Izzy? Well, it sounds difficult (after all, Izzy's wound looked serious), but not entirely impossible.
How To Bring Back Izzy
Instead of a classic burial at sea, Izzy was buried on land, which was already seen by many as a sign. With his body in the ground, there is an opportunity for magic to happen. Or was the seagull Buttons' visit just a coincidence?
Besides, we didn't even see the body after Izzy died on the ship. What if it was all a trick by someone from the Revenge crew? Well, that's a long shot. But we can still hope, right? And David Jenkins' tweet certainly adds fuel to our fervent hopes.
