Fans are still not over the controversial happy ending of The Vampire Diaries.

The CW's The Vampire Diaries is still one of the most popular supernatural teen series out there, thanks to the great mix of interesting romantic storylines with genuinely thrilling action set pieces that made the show a huge hit all those years ago.

However, even though the series itself is fondly remembered by fans, its finale proved to be rather divisive, as many viewers argued it was too sweet and not fitting for the characters.

While most of the fandom loved the pairing of Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert, a lot of people felt that the writers' decision to give them a happy ending was far too easy and trite for the beloved couple. In the finale, viewers were treated to a fast-forward, revealing that Damon and Elena got married, had children, and lived a peaceful and loving life until their respectful deaths from natural causes.

Needless to say, after seeing what Damon and Elena went through during the series, such a finale seemed like an insult to fans. People lambasted The Vampire Diaries writers, saying that they should have come up with a more complex, perhaps even ambiguous, ending for their characters, instead of the simplistic happily-ever-after.

'As a Delena fan, I like them being endgame, why lie? But not this cliché "okay they married happily now they have kids" endgame. I just can't imagine them to be that normal, and I can't imagine Damon to be the one to give Elena that kind of peaceful life. It doesn't make sense,' one fan said.

Damon is one of the show's most controversial characters, so seeing him change his ways and just live a happy life didn't make a lot of sense to fans. Previously, they expected Elena to either leave him or somehow reform his ways, which she apparently did — but this happened off-screen, leaving viewers completely unconvinced.

In any case, even a spoiled finale didn't make fans hate the show. Aside from that stupid happy ending, most people agree that the writers managed to make The Vampire Diaries pretty cohesive.
