Director Shawn Levy hails the Stranger Things series finale as a masterpiece—deeply satisfying and moving.

Stranger Things is heading into its final landing, and yeah, the pressure is massive. The good news: someone who has actually seen the last episode says it delivers.

Shawn Levy — the Deadpool and Wolverine director who also directed some of Stranger Things season 5 — has watched the finished cut of the series finale. He told Collider he thinks the Duffers stuck the landing in a big way.

"Having watched the final version of the final episode of the final season of Stranger Things, it is a masterpiece. The Duffers have stuck that landing. So 10 out of 10 perfect. And I know it sounds like I’m kind of promoting my own show, but this is really said with just deference and tremendous respect to Matt and Ross, who wrote and directed that finale episode. And it is so deeply satisfying and moving. I have to say, it wrecked me."

Not exactly a neutral observer, sure, but Levy basically goes full-throttle with the praise while pointing all the credit at Matt and Ross Duffer, who wrote and directed the last episode themselves. If you were worried about a wobbly ending, that’s a pretty confident signal.

As for what actually happens at the end? Still a mystery. The Duffers have kept plot details locked up. What we do know: this is not a wing-it situation. They’ve had the endpoint mapped for years. Ross Duffer has said figuring out the finale was stressful, but they landed on the last scene six or seven years ago and have known what the final 40 minutes would be ever since. That kind of long-game planning tends to pay off.

Also wild to think about: the show started back in 2016, and this finale arrives just a few months shy of the 10-year mark since season 1 blew up.

If you’re the calendar type, here’s how Netflix is rolling out the last season:

  • Season 5, Volume 1: November 26
  • Season 5, Volume 2: December 25
  • Season 5, Volume 3: December 31

Three drops over five weeks to close the book on Hawkins. Buckle up.
