DC Fans Split on Supergirl Trailer — Heavy Guardians Vibes, More James Gunn Than Superman
Is Supergirl going full Guardians of the Galaxy? DC fans say the new trailer leans hard into quippy, cosmic misfit energy—and the fandom is split on whether it’s a bold homage or a copycat play.
New Supergirl trailer just dropped, and DC fans are already split into camps. The one thing they all agree on: this thing feels a lot like Guardians of the Galaxy. Not a shocker, considering James Gunn is now steering DC Studios. The twist is that Gunn didn't write or direct this one. Craig Gillespie is the guy in the chair, while Gunn is busy with this summer's Superman.
The vibe check
"Kinda funny this looks and feels more like a James Gunn movie than Superman did and he didn't even direct or write this. Heavy Guardians Vol 1 vibes from this."
Fans on Reddit laid out why that comparison keeps popping up: space setting, bounty hunters, oddball character designs, a very intentional soundtrack, and not a lot of sunny daylight. As one person put it, Guardians didn't spend much time in bright daylight either, outside of the Xandar scenes. It's a very specific tonal lane, and Supergirl seems parked in it.
What people are saying
- The Guardians energy: space opera scale, bounty hunters, quirky-looking aliens, and a needle-dropy soundtrack. The whole package screams 2014 Marvel, for better or worse.
- The hype: Jason Momoa as Lobo is getting called perfect casting. Krypto shows up and looks like an agent of chaos in the best way. A few folks even said this makes two DC movies in a row they're genuinely excited about, crediting Gunn for a quick and effective course correction.
- The side-eye: the color grading. People who loved the comic this adapts thought that book was a gorgeous, wildly colorful cosmic trip; the trailer's gray-and-brown palette is bumming them out.
- The shrug: some viewers say it looks fine, familiar, and very much seen-it-before. As in, if it nails the basics, cool, but the trailer itself isn't moving the needle for them.
Story, cast, and the big swing
Milly Alcock (yep, from House of the Dragon) is Kara Zor-El, making her DCU debut in Chapter One's second big-screen entry. This take sends Kara on a revenge mission that racks up a body count, zipping across the galaxy with Krypto the Superdog at her side. Matthias Schoenaerts is playing Krem of the Yellow Hills, the nasty piece of work she'll be gunning for. And yes, Jason Momoa shows up as Lobo, which… yeah, that fits like a spiked glove.
Behind the camera, Craig Gillespie (not Gunn) is directing. It's an interesting contrast: Gunn's running DC Studios and writing/directing Superman, yet this trailer is the one people say feels the most Gunn-ish. Nerdy detail, but it's a fun wrinkle in how the new DCU is taking shape.
Release date
Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
