Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson Are Swapping Notes on the New Harry Potter Series
As HBO’s Harry Potter reboot gathers steam, Daniel Radcliffe says he’s been quietly checking in with Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, hinting at how the original trio feels as a new generation steps into the Wizarding World.
HBO is rebuilding Hogwarts from the ground up, and the original Boy Who Lived is watching the next class file in. Daniel Radcliffe says he has checked in with Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as a new trio steps into those very famous robes. It is, in his words, a little surreal.
Where the new Harry Potter show stands
- Seven seasons planned, one for each book, with a faithful adaptation as the north star
- Production kicked off in July
- Lead cast: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione
- Target premiere: 2027 on HBO
The OG trio checks in
Radcliffe, who carried Harry through eight films between 2001 and 2011, says he has talked with Grint and Watson about the series. It is not a standing group chat dissecting every update, more like the occasional nudge and a shared understanding of what it feels like to start that particular journey.
"It is one of those where I think we all just know how the others feel, because we are also feeling it. You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them. That is the impulse that I think that we, mainly, all have."
Watching new kids put on the glasses
Seeing the fresh faces has Radcliffe looking back at his own first day on the job at 11. Now, when he meets actual 11-year-olds, the scale of what he did hits him a little differently.
"When you are 11, and you are doing something, you are like, 'Of course I am old enough to do this - I am the oldest I have ever been,' but now when I meet 11-year-olds, I am like, 'Whoa, that seems nuts.' It puts it into perspective."
He also gave his parents their flowers for steering him through the chaos with grace.
"Honestly, it makes me admire, and I do tell them this, but my parents, more than I was capable of doing at the time. Just going like, 'Wow, you got me through something crazy, and you did it with a huge amount of humor.' It is a big task."
The bottom line
HBO has its cast, cameras are rolling, and a 2027 debut is on the books. Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson are keeping an eye on it from the sidelines like proud alums watching the next team take the field. Different era, same castle.
