Daniel Day-Lewis returns to acting with Anemone—and he’s hinting it won’t stop there, leaving the door wide open for more roles.

Daniel Day-Lewis is back. Not a drill. He has a new film called 'Anemone' directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, and it does not sound like a one-night-only comeback. The man seems ready, willing, and maybe even eager to keep acting.

So... is he un-retired now?

In an interview with Empire, Day-Lewis made it clear he is open to more work if the right spark hits.

'The appetite always seems to emerge in relation to something that I’ve become fascinated with, and I believe that could very easily happen. I’m certainly not going to shy away from it.'

Translation: if something grabs him, he will do it. Which is exactly what you want to hear from someone who does not take roles lightly.

The Scorsese question

File this under 'dream scenario': Martin Scorsese said last year he would love another round with Day-Lewis after 'The Age of Innocence' and 'Gangs of New York.'

'We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life, I must say. Maybe there’s time for one more. Maybe! He’s the best.'

If those two reunite, the internet might actually shut down for a minute.

About that whole retirement thing

Day-Lewis retired (again) after 'Phantom Thread,' but he now admits he probably should not have announced it in the first place. In his words, saying he was retired felt like 'grandiose gibberish.' He says he never truly meant to quit acting; he just stepped away to do other kinds of work and got labeled as retiring twice. As he gets older, he says it takes longer to find his way back to that internal furnace... and working with 'Ro' (Ronan) lit it right back up. Spending that time together was 'pure joy.'

What 'Anemone' actually is

The film is described as a story about the complicated, deep bonds between brothers, fathers, and sons. Given the real-life father-son dynamic behind the camera, that premise is doing a lot of interesting work already.

  • Star: Daniel Day-Lewis
  • Director: Ronan Day-Lewis (yes, Daniel’s son)
  • Theme: The messy, intimate ties between brothers, fathers, and sons
  • Release: Select theaters on October 3; expands wide on October 10
  • Recent history: Day-Lewis last 'retired' after 'Phantom Thread' but now says he never truly intended to quit, just to step away
  • Possibility on the horizon: A third film with Martin Scorsese has been teased; their previous two are 'The Age of Innocence' and 'Gangs of New York'

Short version: one of our greatest living actors is back, not closing the door on anything, and making a movie with his kid about fathers and sons. That is a pretty great way to come roaring out of 'retirement.'
