Was all that crazy chemistry for nothing?

From day one, Cruel Summer has been the perfect fuel for fan speculation. You have to admit, it's hard not to get hooked on a dark mystery seasoned with compelling clues and the eternal questions of 'Who did it?' and 'Who's lying?' — especially when it's a story about high school students living in an isolated town.

By Season 2, it has become somewhat of a habit for the show's massive fan base to take to social media each week, offering and disputing numerous theories based on the clues and storylines given in the new episode. This week's episode, however, was particularly twisted. The murder mystery really heated up. If you have seen it, you know what we're talking about. If not, beware of spoilers ahead.

With the huge bombshell of Isabella's possible involvement in Lisa's drowning, things seem to have turned upside down for the protagonists and viewers. But that was not the only development that caught the attention of fans.

The mid-season episode showed how the relationship in the main love triangle developed. Isabella took Luke's virginity, but then she backed off and ended things with him as soon as Megan confessed she had feelings for the boy. This upset part of the Cruel Summer fandom, who had a compelling theory of their own.

'I'd say after this latest episode the Megan/Isabella romance theory is dead, which is kinda disappointing for me because I was really liking that idea,' a fan wrote on the show's subreddit.

The undeniable chemistry between Isabella and Megan and the longing looks they've been giving each other have led many to believe that the girls are more than just friends. Before the latest episode aired, this theory perfectly explained why the protagonists were acting suspiciously and even provided insight into Luke's murder.

According to the theory, if Luke caught the girls together and threatened to expose their affair, or even got aggressive at some point, Isabella and Megan might accidentally or self-protectively kill him in a fight.

But with the new details coming out, the theory no longer feels viable. Yes, there's still a chance that one of the girls (most likely Isabella) has a crush on the other, but that chance is getting slimmer and slimmer, which is frankly a shame.
