Criminal Minds' Rossi Stole the Show with Best One-Liner to Date
The usual tense show often uses clever one-liners to take the edge off.
The popular CBS crime series about a group of FBI profilers traveling around the US investigating the most heinous crimes has had a major impact on many other crime procedurals since its premiere in 2005.
Aside from its interesting weekly cases, Criminal Minds has always been praised for its excellent cast chemistry, with each main character being an integral part of the series' success.
Despite the usually tense atmosphere, there were still many fun moments in the series, and one particular example is remembered by fans even years later.
In an episode of season eight called "Carbon Copy", David Rossi uttered one of the most memorable one-line phrases in the series' history, making fans laugh and love Joe Mantegna's character even more.
The scene in question is about Rossi getting one uncooperative detective to help the team, and when he refuses to do so, Rossi jokingly asks the guy, ‘You need a hug or something?’ Such a phrase took fans by surprise, eliciting wild laughter and being remembered for years to come.
Although Rossi's quote is the most mentioned one among Criminal Minds fans, other characters are also capable of delivering memorable one-liners. Aaron Hotchner's question to Reed ‘Did you join a boy band?’ ranked second on the list of the favorite one-liners in the show's history.
The only reason it couldn't top Rossi's quote is because, according to fans, it wasn't scripted, as it was too out of character for Hotch, and was improvised by Thomas Gibson.
People love that CBS allows its stars occasionally to be funny, since the investigations shown on Criminal Minds are often so violent and depressing that relieving the tension with good old-fashioned humor seems simply necessary. Also, the fact that the beloved characters goof around and crack jokes with each other really strengthens the atmosphere of the series, making them seem like real people rather than shallow mannequins.
