Wonder Man almost ended differently. In a new interview, creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest revealed they had an alternate finale in mind for the MCU’s 17th TV series on Disney+, which follows actor Simon Williams played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Marvel almost sent Wonder Man out on a much stranger note. The showrunners kicked around an ending that involved a black box theater, a homemade play, and yes, levitation. Instead, the series wrapped with an escape caper. Let me break down what they almost did, what they actually did, and why they say it all still lands in the same emotional place.

"There was an alternate version where they performed in a black box theater together and levitated off the floor. That's true."

The ending they almost went with

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest revealed they had a different finale on the table. At first, Guest joked he thought the play might have been Hamlet. Then he corrected himself: the idea was a play Trevor Slattery wrote. It wasn't great at first, but Simon Williams steps in and essentially rescues it, turning the performance into something that works. Cretton added another wrinkle: in that version, Trevor disappears for a while, gets into writing, then puts on the show. The visual grace note? During the performance, the two literally lift off the floor. It's a very specific theater-kid flourish that would've been a swing.

What we got instead

The aired finale keeps the focus on their messy bond in a more straightforward way: Simon breaks Trevor out of prison, and they take off together. Cretton said the emotional destination was always the same regardless of the staging. Guest framed it as both men — who they openly describe as narcissists — finally prioritizing someone else, and doing it because they genuinely care about each other.

Quick refresher on the show

  • Wonder Man is the 17th television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • It follows two actors — Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) — chasing career-defining roles that could change their lives.
  • Premiere date: January 27, 2026 on Disney+.
  • All eight episodes are now streaming.

Honestly, I kind of want to see the levitating black box version as a bonus short someday. But given where the characters end up, you can see why the team says the finale we got still hits the same heart.
