Comedy Titans Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cecily Strong Team Up for Mary Bronstein’s Darkly Funny Nanny-Squatter Dramedy Series
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cecily Strong join forces for Nanny Squatters, a Mary Bronstein dramedy nearing a green light at Apple.
Apple is circling a new dramedy called Nanny Squatters, and the combo of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cecily Strong at the center of it is exactly the kind of chaos I want in my queue.
The project
Apple is close to locking a deal to greenlight Nanny Squatters, a series led by Louis-Dreyfus and Strong. Both are also executive producing. The show takes its cues from a New York Magazine article by Bindu Bansinath, and Apple is on board to produce.
Who is making it
Mary Bronstein (Yeast, Round Town Girls, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You) will write, direct, and serve as showrunner. Joining Louis-Dreyfus and Strong as executive producers are Bronstein and Scoop Wasserstein of New York Magazine.
What it’s about
The premise hooks fast: a couple brings a dream nanny into their home, only to watch the lines between work and family start to smear. From there, the situation tilts into a tight, unnerving power struggle. Dramedy with teeth. I can see the cringe already.
Why this cast hits
Julia Louis-Dreyfus does not miss. Seinfeld, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Veep — that run alone is a mic drop. She has also been weaving through the MCU as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, popping up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the upcoming Thunderbolts*.
Cecily Strong brings a different flavor — razor-sharp live comedy instincts from Saturday Night Live and musical mischief in Schmigadoon! with Keegan-Michael Key. She recently voiced Little Judith in Disney's Zootopia 2 and is in the middle of another big swing right now.
Strong’s other gig: a Boys prequel
Strong is currently filming Vought Rising, a Prime Video prequel to The Boys set in the 1950s. The story tracks Soldier Boy and Clara Vought (some know her as Stormfront) as they investigate a murder in the early days of the company. Jensen Ackles leads the show, with a stacked ensemble that includes:
- Mark Pellegrino
- Eric Johnson
- Raphael Sbarge
- David Hewlett
- Aya Cash
- Josh Randall
- Aaron Douglas
- Cecily Strong
- Mason Dye
- Kiki Layne
- and more
The read
Pairing Louis-Dreyfus with Strong under Mary Bronstein’s eye is a quietly wild choice that could pay off big. I want a trailer before I start declaring a new classic, but the setup is sharp, the tone sounds delightfully tense, and the talent is locked in. If Apple actually seals this deal, I’m ready to hit play.
