Colin Farrell Teases a Wild Penguin and Harley Quinn Crossover Fans Won’t Believe

After Margot Robbie signaled interest, Colin Farrell mused about a Penguin–Harley Quinn crossover, framing it as a combustible clash of Gotham power and mayhem that could jolt Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga.
Margot Robbie joked about Harley Quinn linking up with Colin Farrell's Penguin, and now Farrell has weighed in again. Short version: he likes the idea of sharing the screen, but he does not see Oz and Harley as some hot power couple. Not his word, anyway.
So, could Penguin and Harley team up?
Farrell was asked about it at the premiere of his new movie with Robbie, 'A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.' The two Oscar nominees co-star in that romantic fantasy, which opens in US theaters on September 19, 2025. He plays Oswald 'Oz' Cobblepot in Matt Reeves' Batman 'Epic Crime Saga' world, and Robbie is, of course, Harley Quinn from the DCEU era.
How we got here
- Back in August 2025, during a Variety chat, Robbie tossed out the idea of Penguin and Harley crossing paths and told the outlet to ask James Gunn about it. She described them as a 'hot' and 'demented' duo. Farrell immediately side-eyed the 'hot' part.
- Cut to the 'A Big Bold Beautiful Journey' premiere: Entertainment Tonight brought it up again and asked Farrell, now 49, about that 'hot couple' label.
'I can't imagine that. That’s for the Penguin's Perspective.'
Farrell also clarified the whole 'crossover' buzz. When pressed on whether Robbie could jump into his Batman sandbox, he pushed back on the framing: 'I don't think what she meant by crossover is what you received.' Translation: people heard 'rom-com chaos in Gotham,' and he heard something looser, like just being in the same orbit without forcing a romance.
What Farrell actually seems open to
When the interviewer reframed it as simply Penguin and Harley 'hanging out' on screen, Farrell called that a 'blast.' He pointed to his favorite moments on HBO's 'The Penguin' — scenes where Oz and Cristin Milioti's Sofia Gigante (née Falcone) are, in his words, 'pals.' He said he imagines sharing scenes with Robbie's Harley would have that same crackle.
The inside baseball part
Robbie's Harley comes from the DCEU era, while Farrell's Oz lives in Reeves' separate, grounded Gotham crime saga. So a true crossover would need executive blessing — hence the nod to James Gunn. And while Robbie leaned into the 'hot and demented' angle for fun, Farrell is clearly more into the idea of character chemistry than a headline-grabbing ship.
