Matt Reeves just dropped a new update on The Penguin season 2, and fans of Colin Farrell’s dark turn are in for some thrilling news.

Quick update from Gotham: Matt Reeves says The Penguin season 2 is not a done deal yet, but the wheels are turning. If you were hoping for a release date, not today. If you wanted to know whether they are actually talking about it, yes. Loud yes.

So, is season 2 happening?

Speaking to Variety on the 2025 Emmys red carpet, Reeves kept it cautious but optimistic. He said they are just starting to figure out what a follow-up might look like and will only move if they can top what they already did. The vibe was basically: no rush, no compromise.

"We're just in the beginning of thinking about it... We definitely would love to."

He also said he is actively in discussions with showrunner Lauren Lefranc about what a second chapter could be. Translation: there are real conversations, but nothing to announce yet.

Why the careful tone?

Because season 1 hit bigger than anyone on that team expected. Reeves called the Emmys attention an honor, admitted it would have been 'insane' to predict those nominations, and praised the cast and crew for wildly overdelivering. The show has since picked up multiple Emmys, including a big one: Cristin Milioti won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for playing Sofia Gigante (nee Falcone). Yes, that category placement is a little inside baseball for a series, but the hardware is real.

The Batman cameo that did not happen

Reeves, who serves as executive producer and writing supervisor on The Penguin, also confirmed they debated bringing in Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne for a cameo. They ultimately passed. Creative choice, not a snub — the focus stayed on Oz and Gotham's underworld without the cape sucking the oxygen out of the room. Honestly, fair call.

Season 1 snapshot

  • Spin-off of 2022's The Batman, centered on Colin Farrell's Oswald 'Oz' Cobblepot.
  • Premiered on HBO September 19, 2024; season 1 wrapped November 10, 2024.
  • Emmy run: multiple nominations and several wins, including Cristin Milioti's Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Sofia Gigante.

Bottom line

Nothing is greenlit yet, but Reeves and Lefranc are actively talking. If they can make a season 2 that meets or beats the first, they want to do it. Until then, patience — and maybe rewatch that finale, because the bar they set is exactly why they are not rushing back.
