An action movie from Netflix, a blockbuster from Alex Garland and, of course, a Luca Guadagnino film about love and tennis.

The Academy once again failed to please either the public or the industry, but this time they went even further – they dropped a time bomb with a record number of nominations – Emilia Perez.

Although the Oscars have always been controversial, this year they seem to have become an order of magnitude stronger. We chose films from 2024 that were worthy of at least one nomination.

1. Rebel Ridge, 2024

Jeremy Saulnier, known for the crime thrillers Green Room and Blue Ruin, once again breaks the usual revenge movie genre mold.

An ex-military man rides a bicycle with a large sum of money he plans to use as bail to get his cousin out of jail. He is beaten by the cops, and the money is confiscated until the circumstances are clarified.

It soon becomes clear that this is no accident, but a plan to replenish the city's coffers. No one will return the money, and a chain of events leads to tragic consequences.

2. Challengers, 2024

A story about interpersonal power and status: sex, tennis, marriage – everything becomes a game in which everyone plays their own part. Using the tension on and off the tennis court, Luca Guadagnino takes the love triangle to a new level.

Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor have formed a strong on-screen bond that knows no limits: the characters are always on edge, ready to leap into each other's arms at any moment.

3. Civil War, 2024

Alex Garland's film is the most expensive movie in A24's history, which is an event in itself. For Garland, who has been making sci-fi for many years, Civil War was not just a way out of his comfort zone, but a real stepping stone into the world of expensive commercial blockbusters.

A civil war is raging in America. The combined forces of Texas and California are advancing on Washington and preparing to kill the President. Photojournalist Lee, together with journalist Joel, wants to get to the head of state, take some pictures and ask a few questions while the ruler is still alive.

4. Look Back, 2024

Manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto, known for his chaotic, bloody, and daring hits Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch, suddenly changes tone and turns to a deeply personal subject – creativity, trauma, and the path one must walk in order not to break.

Look Back is the story of an artist who tries to escape from himself, but despite the pain and doubt, inevitably returns to his art.

The hour-long anime immerses you in an atmosphere of creative routine, burnout, and introspection. But behind the monotony there are real emotions: in this world full of suffering and disappointment, art becomes the only way to feel not alone.
