The sequel series disappointed some fans.

FX's Justified was one of the most popular TV series of the last decade, and for good reason — Timothy Olyphant's performance as Marshal Raylan Givens was as iconic as they come, and Walton Goggins' Boyd Crowder was also a phenomenal villain for this tough crime show.

So when FX announced that Raylan would be back for more action in a limited series called Justified: City Primeval, fans were ecstatic, expecting a season of unparalleled quality. Well, they were certainly a little mistaken.

Don't get us wrong — Olyphant looked great as a slightly older and more tired Raylan, and Boyd Holbrook's take on Clement Mansell also managed to delight the audience. However, the whole season had one big problem: the protagonist wasn't really the focus of the story.

While fans of the original Justified were expecting to see the beloved Marshal in all his glory, the producers decided to change focus in City Primeval and spent more time following other characters, leaving Raylan himself on the sidelines.

Weak Penultimate Episode Proved City Primeval's Biggest Problem Once AgainThere's no denial, of course, that the writing quality is still great in the sequel, but the shift in focus was too sudden and unwarranted. Hopefully, if the creators decide to continue the Justified franchise, its original main character will be given more or at least just as much spotlight as the new characters.

'I understand they're setting up a new world and characters essentially, but really, am I the only one who thinks the only relevance Raylan has had was in the first two episodes? I was looking forward to seeing the series have to rely on Raylan for once instead of having Boyd almost steal the show from him like he did in the original series. But six episodes in and they've literally spent more time on the lawyer and her brother than him,' a disappointed fan wrote on Reddit.

Apparently, Raylan Givens was relegated to a glorified extra in City Primeval. Instead of him, some seemingly minor characters like Aunjanue Ellis' Carolyn Wilder and Vivian Olyphant's Willa Givens, the protagonist's daughter, took center stage. Even though both actresses did a great job playing their characters, many fans were irritated because the show did not give them what it promised: the grand return of Olyphant's character.

The next episode of City Primeval will air on FX on August 22, 2023.
