Chicago Med's Colin Donnell Announces Return to the Spotlight, but There's a Catch
His new role has nothing to do with NBC's medical drama.
Colin Donnell is back! Since leaving Chicago Med in 2019, Donnell has appeared in a handful of projects, including the rom-com Love on Ice and the mystery movie To Catch a Spy. His latest role was in 2022's miniseries Irreverent, where he played protagonist Paulo, a Chicago gangster.
And now, Donnell is ready to reach new heights in his career, but it looks like his upcoming role has nothing to do with the popular medical drama.
In April, NBC announced the renewal of Chicago Med for a ninth season, but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, we won't be seeing the continuation anytime soon. However, this gave fans hope that Donnell's Dr. Connor Rhodes might come back to the story after the long absence.
A talented cardiothoracic surgeon, Rhodes was one of the most popular characters, thanks to his dedication to his work and a traumatic past. However, Season 5 shook the fans and the character himself, as Rhodes' ex-girlfriend Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) killed his father, with whom he had a long-time feud.
When the truth came out, Ava committed suicide, and Connor was forced to leave Gaffney and Chicago for a fresh start. So is there actually any chance the character could come back to the series?
'I have not ever heard any news about Connor's return, but I know that they said the door was always open and he's somewhere at another hospital doing something,' Colin Donnell shared in 2022.
So we hasten to disappoint you — the actor's return to the spotlight does not concern Chicago Med, as he's about to tackle a completely new project for him. However, his new role is going to be no less brilliant!
In addition to his work on television and the big screen, Colin Donnell has also appeared on the theater stage, including productions on Broadway like Jersey Boys, Anything Goes, and Violet. And now, the actor has announced to his fans that he's joined a new interesting show.
The comedy play The Shark Is Broken tells about the shooting of Steven Spielberg's Jaws. The plot is built around three actors — Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, and Richard Dreyfuss — who spend several weeks on a boat when a mechanical shark breaks down.
The play was written by Robert Shaw's son, Ian, and is based on the actors' memories about constant bickering between veteran Shaw and young Richard Dreyfuss.
Colin will play the role of Roy, who attempts to resolve the conflict between the two men. Spending many weeks on the boat, the three actors clash, reconcile, tell anecdotes, and share philosophical musings.
So fans, don't miss the opportunity to see your favorite actor live if you're in New York City!
