Not very nice—three words that lit the fuse on a backlash now building over the latest move.

Paloma Faith just got taken out first on The Celebrity Traitors, and the person who did it was her real-life mate Alan Carr. Cold move. She talked about it on the companion show The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked and, unsurprisingly, she is not thrilled about being the opening 'murder' of the season. For context: yes, this is the Paloma Faith of 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' and 'Never Tear Us Apart' fame.

So what actually happened

Claudia Winkleman kicked off the first-ever celebrity season by tapping three Traitors: Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Cat Burns. For their debut 'murder' in the castle, production made it weirdly specific: they had to kill in plain sight by touching their chosen victim's face without raising suspicion.

Because Paloma and Alan came in chatting away and visibly friendly, Alan figured he could get away with it. He chose Paloma himself and did the deed by casually brushing a bit of hair out of her eyes. The logic, according to him: if he 'murders' his closest friend, no one will suspect he's a Traitor. Strategically tidy. Personally brutal.

Paloma's take

On Uncloaked with host Ed Gamble, Paloma made it clear she would not have flipped the script if the roles were reversed. She called it a choice Alan didn't have to make, even if it was the easy one, and she was surprised he went there. In her own words:

'I don't think it was very nice... If the shoe was on the other foot, I wouldn't have done that.'

She also couldn't get behind the idea that picking off your closest friend is some magic cloak of innocence. Fair.

Where they stand now

Despite being gutted to exit first, Paloma says Alan is too loveable to stay mad at. They've spoken since, she forgives easily, and, as she put it, she loves him. So no long-term feud, just a very awkward first episode.

When to watch

The Celebrity Traitors continues Wednesday 15 October at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
