Casey's Chicago Fire Comeback Sparks Brettsey Hopes
Chicago Fire's season 11 came to an end on April 5, bringing back one of the most beloved characters of the entire series and giving fans hope that they may see him again next season.
That's right — to the surprise (and delight) of the show's viewers, Jesse Spencer is back on Chicago Fire as Matthew Casey, and his character's appearance may suggest that his romantic relationship with paramedic Sylvie Brett isn't over yet.
Last season, Casey leaves Chicago for Oregon to take care of the two underage sons of his friend and colleague Andy Darden, who was killed in the line of duty. The boys' mother is in jail, so the children are left unsupervised, and Casey decides to stay with them until one of the brothers turns 18.
However, his girlfriend Sylvie Brett chooses not to leave Firehouse 51, and this forces the characters into a long-distance relationship and eventually leads to their breakup.
But now in season 11, Matthew is back to Chicago, but only for a short while though. He returns to inform his team about the terrorist attacks in Portland, which can also happen in Chicago.
During Casey's conversation with friends, Brett walks in and is visibly shocked by her former lover's unexpected appearance. Casey finds out that Sylvie has a boyfriend and lies that he's also seeing someone. The exes reunite briefly at Cindy's party, and Sylvie leaves, crying on her way out, which clearly indicates she still has feelings for Matthew.
Of course, this plot twist was bound to make viewers speculate whether the characters have a chance to reignite their romance.
'That Brettsey ending feels so unfinished. Almost makes you wonder if Jesse is coming back as recurring next season or if he's going to leave. But I don't think it's the end for them,' one of the fans shared their thoughts on Reddit.
In fact, the actor himself hinted at the idea that the two characters might restore their relationship. Speaking about Matthew's possible reappearance on the show, Spencer confirmed that, 'There is potential in the future because his time in Oregon will come to a close, and he's not there for love.'
Season 12 of Chicago Fire has not been announced yet, but fans should certainly expect that the writers will continue the storylines started in earlier seasons, including the 'Brettsey' love arc.
