Thought shelved, the M3GAN spin-off SOULM8TE just jolted back to life, with a surprise update hinting Universal and Blumhouse could still get the June 2024-announced project to screens—riding momentum from the 2023 original and its 2025 sequel directed by Gerard Johnstone.

Thought SOULM8TE was toast? Maybe not. The M3GAN spin-off that quietly vanished from the release calendar has twitched back to life with an official rating, which usually means someone, somewhere, is doing real work on it.

Quick refresher

  • SOULM8TE is a spin-off of Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions' M3GAN franchise. The first M3GAN hit theaters in 2023, and M3GAN 2.0 followed in 2025. Both were directed by Gerard Johnstone.
  • SOULM8TE was announced in June 2024 and initially set for January 9, 2026.
  • In December 2025, Universal pulled it from the release schedule, and the project was shopped to other studios. Updates stopped, and the whole thing looked stalled out.
  • This week, SOULM8TE received an official MPA rating: R for 'strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language.'

So what changed?

That R rating is the first clear sign the movie is still moving through the system. No studio handoff or release plan has been announced yet, but getting rated usually points to active behind-the-scenes business. Translation: an actual update could be on deck instead of wishful thinking.

The release question

Does this end up in theaters or land on a streamer? With M3GAN 2.0 underperforming at the box office, a streaming debut would not surprise me. Nothing is decided, though, and the rating alone does not tip the scale either way.

Who is making it

Kate Dolan, who directed You Are Not My Mother, is at the helm. The cast includes Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, and Oliver Cooper.

What it is about

The setup is simple and creepy: a grieving man buys an android for companionship after his wife dies. Given that R rating breakdown, expect this to go harder and darker than the mainline M3GAN movies.

Bottom line: SOULM8TE looked buried, but the rating gives it a pulse. Now we wait to see who picks it up and how they plan to roll it out.
