Canceled But Not Slain: Chloé Zhao Teases What’s Next for the Buffy Reboot
The filmmaker just dropped a cryptic hint that the series could live on beyond Hulu.
Well, that stings. Over the weekend, Sarah Michelle Gellar told fans that the Buffy reboot — titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale — isn’t moving ahead at Hulu. After two decades of on-and-off revival chatter, the original Slayer herself was finally set to return and even produce. On paper, that should have been the moment the stakes hit the heart in a good way. Instead, Hulu passed on the pilot.
What Hulu Walked Away From
Here’s why this decision raised eyebrows: Gellar was back as Buffy, serving on both sides of the camera. And the creative team included Chloe Zhao, who directed and produced the pilot and already has Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director on her shelf for Nomadland. Between the returning star, the prestige filmmaker, and the built-in audience, a greenlight felt inevitable. Apparently, it wasn’t.
Chloe Zhao Weighs In
Zhao addressed the decision and made it clear the team approached this with reverence for the original series and its fans.
'I had an incredible, incredible time with Sarah, with all the cast and crew doing this. And we, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show.'
'Our priority for Sarah and for us has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans.'
She also struck an optimistic tone about what could come next, hinting that this might lead somewhere unexpected. When pressed on the chance of another home, she kept it simple:
'Welcome the mystery.'
The Whedon Context (And Why It Matters)
For anyone bracing for the other shoe to drop: Joss Whedon had no involvement in this reboot. That’s worth saying out loud, given the baggage that’s built up around his name in recent years.
After Buffy, Whedon created Firefly and directed Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He later stepped in to finish Justice League after Zack Snyder’s exit. Then, in 2020, actor Ray Fisher accused Whedon of unprofessional, toxic behavior during Justice League, prompting Warner Bros. to open an investigation that Fisher’s costars publicly backed. In 2021, Buffy and Angel alum Charisma Carpenter came forward with her own account of toxic conduct, with Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg supporting her and sharing their experiences. Again: none of that connects to New Sunnydale, but it’s part of the wider picture of how this franchise gets talked about now.
This Has Happened Before
If you’re getting flashbacks, you’re not alone. In 2017, Kevin Bacon returned as Valentine McKee for a Tremors series at Syfy. A full pilot was shot. In 2018, the network passed. Despite Bacon’s star power and very public enthusiasm, it never aired. Different franchise, same maddening outcome.
So, Is Buffy Truly Dust?
Officially, Hulu’s out. Unofficially, Zhao’s 'welcome the mystery' leaves the door cracked. Projects with this much talent and name recognition don’t always stay buried. If this thing rises again somewhere else, here’s hoping it actually survives the sunlight this time.
