Adapted from Lev Grossman's novels, this fantasy juggernaut still crackles with wit and wonder—proof its magic endures.

HBO has its big Harry Potter redo lined up for 2027, so if you want something magical to fill the gap right now, go hit play on The Magicians. It is the grown-up fantasy people kept calling an adult Harry Potter back in the day, but that undersells how wild, dark, and sharply funny this thing is. Five seasons, wall-to-wall sex, violence, swearing, and actual consequences — you can burn through a lot of truly chaotic television over a long weekend.

So, what is The Magicians?

Based on Lev Grossman’s trio of novels, the series follows Quentin Coldwater, a grad student who stumbles into Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy and finds out the fantasy universe he obsessed over as a kid is very real — and very dangerous. On paper, sure, that sounds Potter-adjacent. In practice, it slides closer to a mash-up of wizard-school drama, Narnia-style portal fantasy, mythic weirdness, and the darker corners of Grimm fairy tales.

It is also blunt about heavy stuff: trauma, mental health, sexual assault, escapism, and what it actually costs to grow up. The show uses magic as the metaphor while it keeps poking the same nerve: if you want your life to change, you have to own your choices first. It is a coming-of-age story that refuses to flatten adulthood into a neat lesson.

How it got here

The novels may not have been the sales juggernaut some fantasy series are, but they built a passionate readership — three books strong, with fans still asking for a fourth. In the meantime, the world has carried on in graphic novel form. Syfy brought the story to TV in 2015, with Sera Gamble and John McNamara turning Grossman’s creatures and cosmology into five seasons of increasingly ambitious, unreasonably entertaining television.

The fanbase locked in early and loud, and the show wrapped in 2020 with its reputation sealed as a modern cult classic. Six years on, the love has not cooled: it sits at 91% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 74% audience score. That tracks. It is messy in the right ways and slyly sincere under all the snark.

Where to watch (and why now)

All five seasons of The Magicians are streaming on Prime Video. If you missed it during the original run, now is the moment. If you watched it live, you already know it holds up — sharper, stranger, and more emotionally honest than most fantasy shows dare to be.
