Masters of the Air’s breakout star has surged to frontrunner status to inherit Daniel Craig’s 007 tux.

The Bond rumor mill never sleeps, and this week it cranked its gaze toward Callum Turner. He showed up in Berlin to promote a new movie and instead got asked the question that has haunted half of British acting for the last few years: Are you 007 now?

The Berlin moment

Turner was at the Berlin Film Festival with his drama Rosebush Pruning when a reporter tried to clear the air early. He kept it cool:

'You are right, it is very early for that question. I am not going to comment on it.'

Before anyone could push further, his costar Tracy Letts cut in with a deadpan assist:

'I am sorry, I am the next James Bond.'

And that was that. Curtain down on the day’s 007 interrogation.

Where the franchise actually is

Here is the broader picture, which has barely changed for ages: the next Bond movie (call it Bond 26 for now) stays in development until the script is finished and approved. Casting follows that, not the other way around. The scuttlebutt tied to this approach keeps circling back to a philosophy often linked to Denis Villeneuve: cast to fit the character on the page rather than dropping a star into a template. Either way, the plan floats toward a reveal sometime later this year, but patience will be required for a few more months.

Why Turner keeps coming up

The studio has been signaling that the next Bond probably will not be a giant, already-household-name star. That immediately bumps up actors like Turner and nudges perennial tabloid favorites like Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson a step back. Turner is 35, has momentum, and is recognizable without being overexposed. That age range also slots nicely into a decade-long run if everything clicks.

The resume check

  • Fantastic Beasts: played Theseus Scamander, brother to Eddie Redmayne’s Newt
  • The Capture: led the thriller series and earned a BAFTA Best Actor nomination
  • The Boys in the Boat (2023): ensemble sports drama
  • Masters of the Air: Apple TV miniseries from the Band of Brothers lineage
  • Eternity (2025): a fantasy rom-com on the way
  • Neuromancer: headlining Apple TV’s adaptation as Case, alongside Briana Middleton, Joseph Lee, Mark Strong, Clemence Poesy, Peter Sarsgaard, and Emma Laird

So... is he Bond?

The rumor that Turner has been telling people he is locked in as Daniel Craig’s successor made noise, but his Berlin sidestep puts everything back where it belongs: in the big pile marked Unknown. His track record suggests the acting chops are there; if anything, he might still need that one knockout, physically driven role to convince the action diehards. Until the script is locked and the official call gets made, he is one of several plausible contenders... and no more certain than any of them.
