Here's how Steven Cree managed to force Balfe to break character.

Starz's Outlander presents itself as a pretty serious show, despite all the time traveling shenanigans and emphasis on the romantic relationships between the characters. However, that doesn't mean that the show's filming is all that high-brow and refined, and the recently released bloopers from the first season certainly prove that notion.

The actors are clearly having fun, chewing scenery and playing practical jokes on each other, making fans love Outlander even more than before.

And of all the actors on the show, Caitriona Balfe is definitely the biggest laugher, constantly breaking character during key scenes.

The most popular example of this came at the end of the very first season, when Balfe's character Claire Randall was having dinner with Steven Cree's Ian Murray. While the scene was supposed to be a pretty serious one, with a dour mood shared by all the characters at the table, some viewers noticed that Claire was seen smiling at the table. Here's why.

It looks like Cree decided to deliberately break Balfe's character, improvising a rather hilarious line and not even caring that the cameras were still rolling.

‘In this take, I randomly decided to pick that up and ask Claire if she wanted stuffed cabbage, deliberately, purely and utterly only to try and make Caitriona laugh. I find it so funny she says ‘no, thank you’ that always makes it even better. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of stuffed cabbage in my life, before that,’ Cree revealed at the SheKnows podcast.

Fans found Cree's joke hilarious, arguing that they didn't expect the actor to have such a great sense of humor. It's nice to know that the awkward dinner table scene worked even though two of the actors in it were messing with each other. This little behind-the-scenes detail really made fans appreciate the cast of Outlander even more.

Luckily, viewers will get to see Steven Cree again this year, as the actor is scheduled to appear in the upcoming seventh season.
