As the thirteenth season of Blue Bloods airs, fans are discussing their favorite (and least favorite) characters on the show. Detective Maria Baez seems to be caught in the middle.

Portrayed by Marisa Ramirez, Baez is a bit of a replacement for Jennifer Esposito's Jackie Curatola, whose dramatic firing from Blue Bloods made headlines in 2012.

While it is commendable that the showrunners decided to maintain the overall diversity of the show, many fans feel that Baez is not as good a character as Curatola once was.

"I much preferred Jackie even though she didn't last 2 seasons as Danny's partner. It seemed they complemented each other very well and had each other's back. Maria always has Danny's back, but it sometimes angers me how they write her character to be a much less capable detective than Danny," user liryccc wrote in a Reddit thread.

Her "inferiority" to Detective Danny Reagan seems to be the stumbling block for some Blue Bloods viewers. It is understandable that Danny would want to protect her and treat her like a lady. But the verdict of Blue Bloods fans is that they are supposed to be equal partners first and foremost. And unfortunately, it doesn't seem that way.

Zero Chemistry Makes Blue Bloods' Jamie & Eddie Scenes Painful to Watch

What's more, people are wondering why in the world Baez's character is needed at all when it's Danny who does the heavy lifting whenever there's action. Marisa Ramirez's character feels superfluous to the plot as it is. She doesn't add anything and her lines say obvious things, according to fans of the show.

As for Jackie Curatola, Blue Bloods fans are still not over the character being written off the show. From their point of view, Jennifer Esposito's character was much more vibrant and powerful. She was alive and an integral part of the show's storyline.

In ten seasons without Esposito, her "replacement" has yet to win over the audience. Of course, Maria Baez is not that awful and bland. Otherwise she wouldn't have been kept on the show for ten years. She is just not as popular as Jackie Curatola used to be.
