Chainsaw holstered: Evil Dead icon Bruce Campbell is stepping back from the blood-soaked franchise that made him a cult legend, citing a new-age creative process and heavier studio involvement that he says have drained the scrappy, DIY spirit he loved.

Bruce Campbell is easing off the Evil Dead gas pedal, and yes, he knows that sounds wild coming from the guy who helped build the cabin. But after decades of Ash, producing duties, and a lot of notes, the 67-year-old is shifting his attention to a different passion project: his indie comedy Ernie & Emma.

What pushed him to step back

On a recent Zoom call, Campbell described the moment the lightbulb went off. A couple of years back, he sat in on an early development meeting for Evil Dead Burn with French filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček. The director brought in a 10-page treatment laying out his A-to-Z vision. What came back: roughly twice as many pages of studio notes. At a certain point, the math writes itself.

'You guys got this. I think you guys got this.'

Campbell said he had grown tired of debating story and structure with filmmakers literally half his age, and he has zero appetite for the modern development obstacle course, especially the executive-notes loop. So he chose to step back from the heavy involvement and let the new team run.

He is not abandoning the franchise

Campbell is still in business with his longtime partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. That part is not changing.

'I'm partners with the guys. Nothing else has changed.'

Where he's been, where he's going

  • Led the first three Evil Dead films as Ash Williams
  • Cameoed and produced the 2013 reboot
  • Starred in the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead
  • Executive produced 2023's Evil Dead Rise
  • Will reprise that executive producer role on Evil Dead Burn, directed by Sébastien Vaniček

The other project on his mind

With less time sunk into franchise wrangling, Campbell is prioritizing Ernie & Emma, his indie comedy feature. Different lane, fewer cooks in the kitchen.

Release date check

Evil Dead Burn is set to hit theaters on July 24, 2026.
