Bridgerton Spoilers: How Does Penelope End Up With Colin in the Books?
Here's how the unlikely couple fell in love.
While fans were somewhat disappointed to learn that Netflix had chosen to deviate from the original chronology of Julia Quinn's novels in order to release the season featuring Penelope and Colin first, one thing is undeniable: everyone wants to see fan-favourite Penelope finally find love, acceptance and happiness.
As a result, when filming for the upcoming third season officially ended, fans began to speculate about whether Netflix may also have changed the way Colin and Penelope became a couple in the original book.
In the fourth book of the series, titled Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, it is revealed that Penelope has had a massive crush on Colin since she was just 16. Thus, it is rather heartbreaking to learn that she could not make her feelings known to him until she was 28 and Colin was 33. After Colin returns from his world travels, the two resume their friendship after Penelope gets duly impressed by the exceptional quality of Colin's writing in his travelogues.
Sometime later, Penelope finds herself in an especially bad mood and asks Colin to kiss her so she can experience what it feels like to be loved before she dies. To his own astonishment, Colin falls in love with her on the spot, and the two finally share their long-awaited proper first kiss. However, that is not the moment they begin thinking about marriage.
At one point in the story, Colin decides to follow Penelope into town and stay behind to discover what she is up to. To his surprise, he sees that Penelope has travelled to town just to drop a letter in a mailbox, and he immediately realises that she must be Lady Whistledown. After confronting Penelope and learning the truth, Colin falls even more in love with her, and the two make love in the carriage that is taking them to the countryside.
So that's how Penelope and Colin become a couple in the book. While the book offers many more passionate episodes, there's no denying that the upcoming third season should be one of the raciest in Bridgerton's history, making it well worth the long wait.
