Bridgerton Season 4 swings early with its most shocking twist yet, veering from Julia Quinn’s timeline with a game-changing death that resets the board for Season 5. As the ton reels, the showrunner spells out the fallout—and teases which Bridgerton takes center stage next.

Bridgerton Season 4 swung the hammer fans of the books have been bracing for, and it landed earlier than expected. The show just dropped a major death that clears the lane for Season 5 while tossing the big question out there: which Bridgerton gets the spotlight next?

The heartbreak in Episode 6

Midseason, the series delivers the moment book readers knew was coming. In Episode 6, John Stirling - Francesca's kind, steady husband - mentions a headache, and not long after, Francesca finds him in their bed. It is abrupt, devastating, and it flips the table on where her story heads from here.

Why the timing changed

Showrunner and executive producer Jess Brownell says the team wanted viewers to fully invest in Francesca and John before pulling the trigger, which shaped when the death landed in the season.

'I think that when we thought about where in the timeline that story point should land, we wanted to do it at a point where we had enough time to really fall in love with Fran and John,' Brownell said.

Dropping it in Episode 6 - not the finale - was very much the point. It lets the season close on a different emotional note for its central couple.

'It felt like this landing at the end of the season - but not in the final episode - made a lot of sense,' Brownell said. 'Because that way we could also create some space for things to get to a nice happy ending with Benedict and Sophie.'

So, who headlines Season 5?

Brownell is keeping that card face down. She has already said Francesca will have another romance ahead, and she has positioned both Francesca's and Eloise's love stories to anchor either Season 5 or Season 6. Asked point-blank if Francesca is next, she kept it coy:

'I can't say. But I think this season we have made some progress on both Francesca and Eloise's arcs in a way that allows us to get closer to telling their stories in [seasons] five and six.'

  • Episode 6 delivers John Stirling's sudden death after a headache, setting up a major turn for Francesca.
  • The choice to place it before the finale was deliberate, giving Benedict and Sophie room for a proper happy ending.
  • Francesca's next romance is on deck; Francesca and Eloise are teed up to lead either Season 5 or Season 6.
  • Which sister goes first remains under wraps.

Bottom line: the show just laid the groundwork for a very different Francesca in the seasons to come. Whether she or Eloise takes the next victory lap is the only mystery left on that front.
