Bridgerton Season 3 Missing Out by Skipping a Book (But We're Okay With It)
Benedict's story is compelling, but it actually makes sense to put it off.
Shondaland may have used Julia Quinn's novel series as the source material for its hit romantic drama, but the creators have never been afraid to alter plot points and character arcs.
Thus, the studio surprised many book fans when it announced that Season 3 of Bridgerton would not be based on the third novel in the series, An Offer From A Gentleman. Instead, it would bypass this book to make room for the emerging love story between Penelope Featherington and the third Bridgerton sibling, Colin.
Fans Have Reason To Be Frustrated
Many of Julia Quinn's fans were disappointed by the change. The story of Benedict Bridgerton, as told in An Offer From A Gentleman, is their favorite in the series, and they were eager to see it adapted for the screen.
The novel has a fairy tale quality to it and is essentially a reimagined Cinderella story. In this version, Benedict plays the role of Prince Charming. The second Bridgerton attends a masquerade where he meets a mysterious young woman dressed in silver.
Naturally, after they share a delightful time together and even exchange a kiss, the girl flees from the ball, leaving Benedict with nothing but a silver glove bearing her initials. Benedict pledges to marry the masked girl and embarks on a quest to find her but to no avail.
Two years later, he meets a maid who stirs deep feelings within him. But how will Benedict handle social inequality? And will he dare to break his own vows?
Postponing Benedict's Story Could Be A Good Thing
An Offer From A Gentleman is a truly enchanting love story, but delaying it actually makes sense for the Shondaland show. There are a few reasons for that.
Storytelling
The first two seasons have developed the arcs of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton to the point where they need to converge. With Eloise uncovering Penelope's dangerous secret and Colin hurting her with his careless words, it's natural for Penelope to transition into a new phase of her life.
As she transforms, so should her relationship with Colin. Keeping their story on the back burner for another season would only detract from the show's cohesion.
Continuity
The writers have changed the timeline of Penelope and Colin's relationship. In the book, they reunite after years of separation. In contrast, Season 3 of the show picks up immediately after the events of Season 2.
This change actually benefits Benedict's story, allowing it to begin in Season 3 and continue into Season 4. He must meet the masked girl and search for her for some time before the narrative gets to the romantic part, which sounds like an excellent subplot.
Polin
Finally, changing the order of the books allows Penelope and Colin to become Polin sooner. And we are all looking forward to this romance.
