When Bridgerton premiered in 2020, it immediately became a cultural phenomenon.

The show, based on Julia Quinn's book series, was a visual feast that showcased the Regency era with a vibrant, lavish, unabashedly modern spin.

One of the main reasons for its success was the presence of Simon, Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page. Fans fell in love with the Duke's brooding demeanor, sharp wit, and undeniable charm. (The abs were just secondary, we swear. We swear, you guys.)

However, much to the disappointment of fans, Page announced his departure from Bridgerton after just one season.

While many fans were disappointed by the news, the decision was met with support from the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes praised Page's decision to leave Bridgerton in an interview with Vanity Fair, stating:

"We made a one-season deal with him at the beginning of the show. That was the plan: come and do one season as the Duke."

No matter how much you miss those abs the character, you have to admire a show that’s willing to prioritize storytelling over star power. Many American television shows have a tendency to continue far beyond their natural lifespan, as the demand for content outweighs the need for a cohesive, well-crafted story.

This often leads to plotlines becoming convoluted and repetitive. Page’s exit meant that Simon and Daphne’s love story was allowed to be wrapped up in a satisfying bow, rather than being stretched out or blocked by arbitrary obstacles.

Page's departure was also a smart decision for the show's overall narrative. Bridgerton is based on a book series, which means that there is a limited amount of material to adapt. By wrapping up Simon's story in one season, the show avoids the temptation to artificially extend his character arc for the sake of keeping him on screen.

Simon and Daphne's romance was given a satisfying conclusion, and the show's subsequent seasons can explore other characters and storylines without feeling the pressure to keep Simon around.

The fan outcry over Page’s departure was so intense that Rhimes herself was a bit nonplussed, and pointed out, "Like, we didn’t kill him, he’s still alive!"

And she’s right – fans need to chill out and appreciate that ultimately, Regé-Jean Page's decision to leave Bridgerton was a smart move for both himself and the show's narrative. His departure demonstrates a commitment to storytelling integrity and allows Bridgerton to avoid the pitfall of overstaying its welcome.
