Bree & Roger Storyline Was the Cringiest Part of Outlander Season 7
Outlander is an extremely popular romantic series, but one scene in Season 7 was so cheesy and unnecessary that viewers felt compelled to skip it.
Outlander has consistently been a fan-favourite romantic series, offering viewers well-developed characters, compelling storylines, genuine emotion, and, of course, some passionate sex scenes. However, Season 7, currently airing on Starz, appears to have taken the passion a tad too far.
In the recently-aired Episode 7, many fans were taken aback by a sex scene between Brianna and Roger MacKenzie. When Roger discovered that his wife was the subject of another man's desires, he tapped into his 'primal' side, and after some sultry dialogue, the couple engaged in passionate lovemaking to the beat of Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight.
For many viewers, however, the scene was far from hot. Many claimed it was so awkward to watch that they had to fast-forward through it. Even Roger's attractive Scottish Highlander kilt couldn't save it.
‘I didn’t need to watch Brianna moaning repeatedly for like 10 minutes! I was just yelling “ew!” the whole time,’ a fan commented on the scene on Reddit, echoing the sentiment of many others.
Fans pointed out that the relationship between Bree and Roger lacked the chemistry vital for a romantic series. Their sex scenes often feel cringe-worthy and uncomfortable. Moreover, many of them are excessive and do not contribute to moving the plot forward.
‘How many times can you watch the same two people get at it?!’ an annoyed fan wrote.
For a genre-bending series like Outlander, it is crucial that romantic moments are treated like any other scene, where they must serve a purpose and somehow advance the plot or character development. Regrettably, the scene between Bree and Roger was nothing of the sort. All it did was consume a significant amount of screen time that could have been put to better use.
And, of course, it was nowhere near the Claire and Jamie scenes that made Outlander the show loved by millions.
‘They did such a good job casting Jaime and Claire based on chemistry, you can even see it on the audition tape,’ a fan commented. ‘Not once in the entirety of the show did I feel even a spark between Brianna and Roger.’
Well, hopefully, the next intimate scene we see will be between Jaime and Claire.
