Fueled by four Oscar nods including Best Picture for 2025’s F1: The Movie, Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali says a Brad Pitt-led sequel is revving up, with a release date update teased at an Apple TV event, per THR.

F1: The Movie just pulled off the rare combo of box office muscle and awards love, so of course the sequel question is already floating around. The short version: the people in charge are open to it, but no one is sprinting to set a release date.

So, is F1 2 actually happening?

At a recent Apple TV event, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali got asked point‑blank about a follow‑up to the 2025 Brad Pitt movie. He said to hang tight for now, hinting that plans are being discussed behind the scenes. If it moves forward, he also made it clear it will not be quick.

"We are going to tell you something more in the future. Never say never. But we need to digest more the success of this movie because it was something unique. And if you want to think of a new one, it has to be really, very, very good. Therefore, if this will happen, it will not be for next year. But maybe next year we are going to be here at the press day, and hopefully we have something more to announce then."

Translation: they are not slamming the brakes, but they are not flooring it either. The earliest you should expect any real update is around this time next year, and an actual sequel would be further down the road.

Why the caution after a hit?

Because the first movie was a real outlier. It was a legit crowd‑pleaser that also landed four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. When you are riding that kind of wave, the next installment has to clear a higher bar. Hard to blame them for not rushing.

The first movie, in brief

  • Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick); written by Ehren Kruger.
  • Led by Brad Pitt, with Damson Idris as Joshua Pearce, Kerry Condon as Kate, Javier Bardem as Rubén, Tobias Menzies as Banning, Kim Bodnia as Kaspar, Shea Whigham as Chip, and Sarah Niles as Bernadette.
  • Real‑life F1 faces pop up too, including producer Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz Jr.
  • Produced by Kosinski and Pitt alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Lewis Hamilton, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, and Chad Omen; Daniel Lupi served as executive producer.
  • Box office: over $631 million worldwide — the biggest hit of Pitt's career.
  • Awards: four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
  • Reception: 82% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes from 364 reviews.
  • Availability: now streaming on Apple TV.

Bottom line

There is interest in F1 2, but the green light is not public yet, and Domenicali is signaling patience. If it happens, it will be because they cracked something that justifies the lap back to theaters — and that is going to take time.
