Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness standout Xochitl Gomez is joining CBS’ Boston Blue as Penny, setting the stage for a possible romance with Sean Reagan and injecting fresh heat into the Blue Bloods spinoff.

Boston Blue just added some Marvel firepower. Xochitl Gomez, who played America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and also won Dancing with the Stars Season 32, is joining the Blue Bloods spinoff in a recurring role. And the way the show describes her character practically screams potential love interest for Sean Reagan.

"A quick-witted, charming young woman with a mysterious past who crashes into Sean's life."

Who is she playing and when does she arrive?

Gomez will recur as Penny, and her first episode is set for Thursday, Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Given that whole 'crashes into Sean's life' setup, it sure sounds like the show is teeing up a romantic storyline for Sean Reagan. If you watched Blue Bloods, that name rings a bell for obvious reasons.

Quick refresher on Boston Blue

The series extends the Blue Bloods world after that show wrapped a fourteen-season run. Donnie Wahlberg is back as Danny Reagan, only now Danny has left New York for Boston, where he signs on with the city police and teams up with Detective Lena Silver. Lena is the eldest daughter in a prominent law-enforcement family, which absolutely tracks for this franchise.

  • Cast: Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan; Sonequa Martin-Green as Detective Lena Silver; Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver; Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver; Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver; Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters; Xochitl Gomez as Penny.
  • Behind the scenes: Showrunners and executive producers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis; executive producers Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Donnie Wahlberg.
  • Produced by: CBS Studios in association with JBTV.

Why Gomez fits here

Beyond Marvel, Gomez got her start on Disney Channel's Raven's Home and broke out as Dawn Schafer in Netflix's The Baby-Sitters Club. Add that DWTS Mirrorball win, and she brings a mix of genre cred and mainstream visibility that a network spinoff loves. Dropping a charismatic newcomer with a murky past into the Reagan orbit is a classic move for this franchise, and it could give the show a fresh dynamic fast.
