Fans are not happy with the character's development.

CBS' Blue Bloods is rightly considered one of the most endearing and well-written crime procedurals on the air today, thanks to the skillful development of the main characters and the warm chemistry between all members of the cast. However, keeping Blue Bloods compelling for more than a decade is no easy task for the writers, so some necessary sacrifices have been made to ensure the series' longevity.

Most of the writers' decisions have been applauded by fans, but many viewers are upset with the way they treated Donnie Wahlberg's Daniel Reagan, who is still one of the most beloved characters on Blue Bloods. From the very first season, Danny's storylines were always the most exciting, all thanks to his insane charisma and loose cannon personality.

Yes, Danny was pretty rough as a cop, often jumping to conclusions and arresting innocent people. But this made him seem more realistic than other characters on the show, even if he sometimes acted like an antihero.

However, the social climate has changed quite a bit in the last decade, and portraying one of the main characters as a perpetrator of police brutality has become much more controversial than it was in 2010. That's why the writers decided to make Danny look softer and more mellow in the latest episodes.

While this helped to save Blue Bloods from any kind of controversy, fans feel that such a sudden change in Danny's personality made him less interesting than before. Of course, Wahlberg's character is still essential to the success of Blue Bloods, but the current iteration of Danny is no longer unique. Viewers say he has become just another cop on just another cop show.

But even with that in mind, it's clear that Donnie Wahlberg is doing his best to make the character relatable, and to a modest degree, he succeeds. After all, millions of people still watch Blue Bloods on a weekly basis, which means that the show hasn't been ruined by the writers completely.

Hopefully, Danny will show some of his original harshness in the upcoming Season 14, which does not have a definitive release date at the moment.
