Michaela Coel and A24 are rebooting Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1988 cult martial-arts classic, with a remake now in the works.

Well, this is a swing. Nearly 40 years after Bloodsport helped turn Jean-Claude Van Damme into a VHS legend, a new take is officially happening — and the person steering it is not who you might have had on your remake bingo card.

Michaela Coel is writing and directing a modern Bloodsport

A24 is developing a contemporary reimagining of the 1988 martial arts cult classic, with Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You) set to write and direct. That pairing is bold and kind of perfect: Coel has zero interest in playing it safe, and Bloodsport was never a movie that played it safe.

For anyone new to the party: the original film followed Van Damme as a U.S. Army captain who sneaks into an underground, full-contact martial arts tournament in Hong Kong and fights his way through a gauntlet of human buzzsaws. The movie slowly picked up a second life over the years and has turned into a streaming favorite recently — the sort of late-night click that ends with you watching the credits at 2 a.m.

'I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET'S F***ING GO.'

What to expect

Details on how closely this version will track the 1988 plot are under wraps. The word being used is 'reimagining,' which leaves plenty of room for surprise — the good kind, if Coel brings her sharp eye for character and structure to the bone-crunching side of things.

Either way, we are headed back into the hard-hitting world of underground fighting for a new generation. More to come.
