It appears that last year's best-dressed celebrity is skipping this year's gala for a rather controversial reason.

The Met Gala is undoubtedly the most significant fashion event of the year, where top celebrities grace the red carpet in their extravagantly expensive outfits and set trends for the remainder of the fashion calendar.

It’s no wonder millions of fashionistas around the world tune in to watch the event every year.

Naturally, everybody who is somebody, big or small, wants to be part of this fashion spectacle, but only the most iconic and influential get invitations from Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the prototype for the despotic boss in the iconic movie The Devil Wears Prada. So, it was quite a shock when Blake Lively decided to forgo the event, even though she had been extended a heartfelt invitation.

Last year, Lively stole the spotlight at the Met Gala in a stunning Atelier Versace gown designed to resemble the Statue of Liberty, which concealed another dress inside. That second dress was revealed right on the red carpet, astonishing fans and fellow attendees.

After such a performance, people were eager to see what Lively would have planned for this year, only to be disappointed when the actress opted out of the event for a rather peculiar reason.

Lively recently informed reporters that she would be skipping the 2023 Met Gala but emphasised that she would be watching it from home, cosying up in front of the TV screen with her husband, Ryan Reynolds. While it's comforting to know that Lively will be joining countless other fashion enthusiasts, some can't help but wonder if the actress has some other reasons for not attending the gala.

Though she might simply be tired, several fans are convinced that Lively chose to skip the gala because this year's event is dedicated to the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who was often accused of making racist and fatphobic remarks. Unsurprisingly, some stars might decide to forgo the event to sidestep the controversy, while others will still attend, likely arguing that the designer's craft speaks louder than his personal views.

The 2023 Met Gala begins at 6:30 p.m. EST and can be streamed on Vogue's official website.
