Jennie's acting career should continue despite her controversial debut.

While only three of the six episodes of Sam Levinson and The Weeknd's The Idol have been released, the show has already caused quite a stir with its scandalous script, problematic characters, and inappropriate sex scenes. The drama series that was meant to satirize the music industry seems to romanticize and even glorify all the disgusting stuff it depicts, which is why so many viewers and critics hated The Idol.

Still, many people continue to watch the show for one reason only — BlackPink's Jennie is starring in it as one of the supporting characters, Dyanne. This series was an acting debut for the K-pop band's member, and while some fans criticize her for agreeing to take part in the controversial project, others argue that The Idol can serve as a great stepping stone for Jennie, helping her storm into the film and TV industry and claim her place there.

'The fact that [The Idol] was about the music industry fascinated me, and I thought I could bring something to the role,' the South Korean singer shared at the Cannes premiere.

However, a lot of fans are uncomfortable about Jennie's decision to take part in such a twisted and problematic drama series. People are citing the example of Jisoo, another BlackPink member who made her acting debut in a K-drama in 2015 and later landed a role in the romantic drama Snowdrop, for which she won the Seoul International Drama Award.

But it looks like Jennie has something different in mind in terms of her career prospects.

'It looks like [Jennie's] aiming for global stardom outside of being a member of BlackPink. Most fans won't admit it, but you can't do that by playing by K-pop rules and doing what other idols are doing, so playing the lead on a K-drama wouldn't make sense for her,' a fan explained.

Perhaps The Idol wasn't the best possible start for Jennie's acting career, but her role in the controversial American series will surely attract more attention to her and cement her status as an actress. Ultimately, it'll give her the freedom to choose the roles she wants to play — and we can totally expect to see Jennie in more decent, quality projects in the near future.
