Big Bang Theory's Lamest Twist Delivers a Pretty Dangerous Message
Fans are offended by the sitcom's questionable message about parenting.
The Big Bang Theory has always been seen as a family-friendly sitcom with the occasional edgy joke, and that was one of the reasons the series enjoyed such immense popularity. The show about four weird scientists and their normal friends was popular from the first season to the last and never really sparked any major controversies.
And yet, some fans still hold a grudge against some of the storylines, arguing that the message they send is questionable, to say the least.
One particular storyline involving Howard and Bernadette is often criticized by fans because the subplot about how Bernadette got pregnant really makes people wonder what message the show's writers were trying to convey.
It was well known that Bernadette never wanted to have children, seeing them as an annoying distraction from achieving more at work. However, her whole approach changed in an instant when she became pregnant.
In the span of a few scenes, Bernadette went from being a vocal pro-choice advocate to an expectant mother, and this sudden change of attitude didn't seem to bother her at all.
She said that her children might be unlike any other and that she would love them with all her heart. Viewers were really upset that the writers decided to ruin the character's personality just to develop the whole motherhood storyline, not caring that it sends a pretty dangerous message to all viewers.
Childfree advocates blame The Big Bang Theory for perpetuating the idea that every ardent child-hater will change their mind the moment they (or their partner) become pregnant, but this is certainly a very delusional message.
What if a person gives birth to a child and then realizes that they still don't love kids? It would be really hurtful to a child that their parents don't love them because their attitude towards parenthood couldn't be magically changed.
Of course, as some TBBT fans argue, the writers probably didn't even think about this problem when developing this particular plot twist, as they were simply just trying to breathe new life (no pun intended) into Bernadette and Howard's somewhat stale storyline.
All in all, it looks like The Big Bang Theory failed to properly address the issue of parenthood, but the show is still a complex and rewarding watch, so many fans are willing to look the other way to preserve their fond memories of the beloved sitcom.
