Bet You Can't Guess How Many Times Wednesday Smiles in Season 1
Let's do some counting.
How many times do you think characters smile in an episode of the average comedy series? Probably uncountable. Wednesday, however, is not your average show. Even though it has 'comedy' in its genre description, the Netflix hit features a character who is not big on smiles. In fact, Wednesday Addams' grim poker face is her trademark.
So how many times do you think this dark and wonderfully ill-tempered character, played by Jenna Ortega, cracked a smile in Season 1?
We won't torture you any further, even though the subject matter demands it. Seven. Wednesday smiled seven times. And each one of those smiles made us understand the character better and like her even more.
The first sign of joy on Wednesday's face came in the premiere episode when she released piranhas into the pool where her brother Pugsley's bullies were swimming. The scene proved that Ortega's performance was a perfect match for the previous Addams adaptations. Her Wednesday is fascinated by all things wicked, malevolent, and out-of-ordinary, but her heart is in the right place.
The next two smiles cemented the impression of the horror-loving, fearless heroine that made Wednesday so special and magnetic. She curled her lips when she found out that her first year in Nevermore had come with a murderous monster mystery and during the rain of blood at the Rave'N dance. Truly, the terror of others is the delight of Wednesday.
The fourth smile, which looked more like a grin, came when Enid's Poe Cup team won the tournament and Wednesday's roommate praised her for her help. Viewers were left to wonder if the smile was directed at a successfully executed revenge plan or at Enid's happiness.
Wednesday just loves to solve a good mystery. To prove it, she gave another smile after figuring out the Nightshade Society's 'snap twice' clue. Predictably, the sixth smile appeared on her face during the disastrous cello concert in the middle of the fire that Wednesday and Thing arranged.
Finally, the last and perhaps most telling smile came when Wednesday was reunited with her Uncle Fester. It was the only time in the entire show that the character actually grinned from ear to ear, no doubt mirroring the expressions of all the fans. Who was not happy to see the beloved Addams character?
The fact that Wednesday's only real smile was directed at Fester speaks volumes. Although the girl has issues with her family, she is dedicated to the Addams and capable of a genuine connection with others, something we will hopefully see more of in Season 2.
