Once one of the most famous celebrity babies ever, what Suri Cruise is doing now and why she never sees her father.

Suri Cruise was born to be a star, the daughter of one of Hollywood's most high-profile relationships: Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Now 17, she seems to have lost touch with her father. The reason is tragic - and more than a little bizarre.

After two decades of dominating the box office, Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes, a young TV star on the cusp of stardom. It was apparently a dream come true for Katie, who had previously revealed that she'd had a crush on Tom as a teenager.

They had only been dating publicly for two months when he proposed to her in Paris. They married in late 2006 in one of the most high-profile weddings of the decade. Their entire relationship was a goldmine for tabloids and journalists alike because of the sudden proposal and, most importantly, the incredible Oprah interview.

A few months before the wedding, almost exactly a year after they announced their relationship, they had a child: Suri Cruise. Suri's birth and early life were closely followed by the couple's fans and the paparazzi. As a result, Suri, now 17 years old, stays pretty far out of the spotlight. She's appeared in a few of Holmes' movies and is reportedly pursuing a career in fashion as she applies to universities in New York.

She also doesn't have a relationship with her father and doesn't even watch his movies - which is difficult given Cruise's prolific filmography. Cruise and Katie Holmes divorced in 2012, with few details about the cause of the split available to this day.

Cruise is a member of the infamous Scientology cult. His adopted children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman also have ties to Scientology, and he's reportedly still close to them. But Suri was never raised in the religion. Cruise said in a libel deposition that he believes Scientology was the reason Holmes filed for divorce a decade ago.

According to the laws of the cult, he cannot have contact with people outside the Church of Scientology (yes, even close relatives). Some reports say he hasn't seen his daughter since 2013.

It may be that he has a relationship with her outside of the public eye to protect himself from backlash from his fellow Scientologists. Either way, it's a sad story for a young girl born into such instant fame.
